History
For almost 10 years the Latitude Artist Community has presented Chair Yoga Classes for its members with disabilities.
We are expanding our yoga program to others with cognitive or physical disabilities -- and to the general public. GrassRootsYoga invites all who seek the benefits of yoga to participate. Our goal is to bring various communities together for this valuable, unique experience. Enrich your own body, mind, and spirit, while bringing your heart and mind to the service of others.
The suggested donation is $5 per class.
Chair Yoga Basics
Chair Yoga provides benefits to individuals who have mobility issues due to age, weight, illness, or injury. GrassRootsYoga founder, Teresa Thompson, has been teaching Chair Yoga to Seniors, and to students with disabilities for many years. Typically chair yoga students have difficulty moving from floor to standing yoga postures, and our classes are modified to meet this need. Chair Yoga promotes effective breathing, increased flexibilty, core strength, balance, and stress relief.
Chair Yoga classes begin with a period of relaxation and centering. Range of motion stretching begins with the neck and shoulders and moves through the major joints and muscle groups of the body. Very importantly, practices addressing memory and focus are introduced. Breath synchronized movement results in a gentle flow of seated yoga postures. After class, students find that they breathe more effectively and feel more positive throughout the day. Techniques taught for stress relief allow students to apply what is learned in practical ways, calming the mind, reducing depression and mental chatter.
A New Sense of Community
The Latitude Artist Community and GrassRootsYoga anticipate a growing spirit of community as our doors open wider to the broader community. Latitude artists are eager yoga students who will benefit greatly by meeting and practicing alongside others. This yoga class is appropriate for all levels, all students, all people. The Hindu Saint Mata Amritanandamayi says, "The beauty and charm of selfless love and service should not die away from the face of the earth. The world should know that a life of dedication is possible, that a life inspired by love and service to humanity is possible."
